United States: Pfizer to Expand Access to HIV Drug
December 5, 2006 On Friday, Pfizer Inc. announced plans to allow HIV/AIDS patients expanded access to a drug not yet approved by regulators but in late-stage clinical trials. Maraviroc belongs to the CCR5 antagonists class of drugs; these work by trying to block HIV from gaining entrance to white blood cells, rather than by fighting the virus inside the cells. The new program will allow patients resistant to other treatments to begin accessing the new drug. In the next few months, Pfizer will start enrolling patients from more than 30 countries in the program, in which they will receive the new drug along with background therapy.
