Tuberculosis Case Confirmed at College of Charleston, South Carolina
March 15, 2002 A case of pulmonary TB has been confirmed at the College of Charleston, and South Carolina health officials want those who had contact with the person to get tested. The patient is off campus and is expected to make a full recovery. The Department of Health and Environmental Control plans to be on campus in April to test people who have had casual contact with the patient. Health officials would not say whether the patient was a student, faculty or staff member. One person who is close to the patient has tested positive, said DHEC spokesperson Linda Pranger. People who have close contact with someone who has TB have a 30 percent chance of getting infected, said Dr. Kathryn Arden, medical director for DHEC's Trident Public Health District. However, those who are infected are not contagious until they come down with the disease, and only 10 percent of infected people ever develop pulmonary TB, Arden said.
