Colorado University to Get Funding, Prestige as AIDS Research Lauded
June 25, 2003 The National Institutes of Health has designated the University of Colorado as a Center for AIDS Research, one of only 20 such academic centers in the country, and the only one in the Rocky Mountain West. The designation will bring $7.5 million in additional AIDS research money to a CU team composed of scientists from National Jewish Medical and Research Center, the state health department, Colorado State University and Children's Hospital. CU currently gets from $15 million to $20 million every year from NIH for AIDS research. Dr. Robert Schooley, who has participated in efforts to develop an AIDS vaccine and has headed international AIDS prevention efforts, said the new center has already gotten more than a dozen research proposals.
