Study: HPV Knowledge Among HPV+ Women

The goal of the current study was to assess knowledge and information seeking among women recently diagnosed with human papillomavirus (HPV).

A two-phase mixed methods design was employed. In both phase I (qualitative) and phase II (quantitative), women with scheduled gynecological exams and Pap smears at clinic sites were asked to participate.

According to the researchers, women expressed confusion about HPV, with most unable to articulate the meaning of their diagnosis. The women reported further information seeking, particularly through the Internet.

"Identifying gaps in knowledge among HPV-positive women who need clear messages to facilitate their comprehension of the diagnosis is an important public health activity," the researchers concluded.
