United Kingdom: Mandela to Mark 90th Birthday With London Concert
June 26, 2008 Former South African President Nelson Mandela will celebrate his 90th birthday Friday with a gala concert in London's Hyde Park. The event will benefit Mandela's 46664 campaign against HIV/AIDS, whose name is a reference to the number he wore during 27 years as a political prisoner under South Africa's apartheid regime. Joan Baez, Simple Minds, Josh Groban, Razorlight, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lenox and Queen plus Paul Rodgers are scheduled to perform; Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton are also expected to be on hand. "The reason why Mr. Mandela is coming to this concert is that it is his way of saying thank you to the British people for the Free Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley in 1988," said a spokesperson for the foundation. Mandela lost a son to AIDS in 2005 and has made fighting the pandemic his chief cause.
