About 100 people attended a Tuesday evening meeting of the St. Lucie School Board, which is considering whether to adopt a new sex education curriculum. Superintendent Michael Lannon has recommended the curriculum, "Get Real About AIDS," and wants the board to vote on it in December. If approved, the instruction would be introduced in January. GRAA concentrates on high school students, though parts of it could be used in middle school. Lannon wants seventh-graders to begin learning about AIDS and other STDs; the topic of condoms would be introduced to eighth-graders. Some 30 people voiced opinions for or against the curriculum during two hours of public comment. More than half the curriculum's 14 lessons address preventing HIV/AIDS and other STDs.
