Chinese AIDS Activist Who Was Held by Police for 41 Days Plans to Sue Government

March 31, 2006

AIDS activist Hu Jia, who said he was kidnapped by Chinese government authorities and detained without reason for 41 days, declared today he will sue the government. "I must take these actions to file a lawsuit and let them know that the Chinese people will still let their voices be heard," he said in Beijing. Hu said he believes he was held because he helped organize a nationwide hunger strike to protest violence against dissidents. At least six others who participated in the hunger strike or had ties to Hu have been detained or gone missing in recent months.
