Losing appetite
Aug 20, 2008
I have been on HIV medication since 2004, my biggest problem since I started medication is loss of appetite. I try as much as possible to force myself to eat but I end up having nausea, then I am forced to stop eating in the middle of the meal. The only food I eat without problems are fruits of any type and juices. For the past 3 years after commencing medication my body weight was 60kgs but from last year todate I weigh +-57 with a drop every month. Is this loss of appetite a result of the medication or its something else? Need your advice Dr.
Response from Mr. Vergel
If you are having nausea, I would try the following:
1- Drink ginger tea twice a day
2- Talk to your doctor about medications like Zofran that work very well at preventing nausea
3- Eat smaller meals during the day rather than 3 bigger ones
4- Breathe deeply using your belly muscles
5- Talk to your doctors about what meds may be causing nausea
6- Some doctors prescribe Marinol (which has THC, the active compound in marijuana that improves nausea and appetite)
7- Some people may have zinc or other vitamin defficiencies that decrease appetite and how we taste food. Have your doctor refer you to a dietitian that can help with this
I hope these tips help
Let me know how it goes
