Neurosensorial hearing loss and cochlear implant
Aug 10, 2008

Suffering from a severe bilateral neurosensorial hearing loss beginning age 25 (long before hiv diagnosis age 43) and wether or not hiv related ( or agravated)my ORL doctor proposes cochlear implant. For now CD4 660 and viral load indetectable under Truvada plus Stocrin. Question: is there an infectious risk of meningitis? Should it be advisable antibioprophilaxys before and after surgery? Seems a common intervention ( 2 days in hospital) but I confess fearing this risk now or later in the disease evolution. Or may be life without hearing and hiv-infected turns the surgery risk acceptable? Do you know any studies about efficacy and complications of this tratment in hiv infected patients? Thank you in advance for your attention.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I don't know of any studies about this particular procedure and the risk of infection. there is always going to be a small risk of an infectious complication, but unlikely any greater in you than in anyone else undergoing this procedure.
